What Is the BuildMOTO Program?
BuildMOTO is a Wisconsin-based educational competition that challenges high school teams to design, build, and customize a motorcycle over the course of the school year. Students handle every phase of the project—from disassembly and mechanical rebuilding to fabrication, design, budgeting, and presentation. The program blends engineering, technical skills, and real-world project management, all while fostering teamwork and creativity. At the end of the build season, teams showcase their motorcycles to industry professionals and judges, highlighting both their craftsmanship and their learning process.
The Build Begins
This week marks the official starting line of the BuildMOTO project. We’re excited to share photos of the motorcycle before it’s disassembled, capturing the machine in its original form just before students roll up their sleeves to tear it down, rebuild it, and bring their own vision and skill to every component.
Learning and Growing Together
One of the most inspiring aspects of BuildMOTO is how it empowers both students and educators to grow together. Lead teacher and mentor Mr. Edward Wagner shared his perspective on what this program means to him and his classroom:
“As I finish my third year of teaching, I am genuinely excited to step fully into the BuildMOTO program. While it may seem unexpected, I did not grow up immersed in the world of automotive technology, nor did I receive formal automotive training in high school or college. BuildMOTO has given me the opportunity to intentionally grow into an area of Technology Education where I knew I needed to stretch. This program will allow me to become a student again. I am excited to learn alongside my own students as we take on the challenge of building something meaningful together. We are curious and committed to bring an incredible motorcycle to life through BuildMOTO.”
